Perhaps today as we hurry along mile after mile, we can slow down, or even stop to take in the amazing natural world surrounding us with a fresh, new perspective.
Lie back and look up, kick back and wonder, stoop down low and be amazed. I think we will be refreshed and renewed! There are times when we are attuned to it that the natural world surrounding us speaks clearly and directly to our souls.
When we take the time to stop, ask, and listen with an open mind, open heart, and we use all of our sensory capabilities, we occasionally hear the voice of wisdom speaking in ways that the written word cannot. As I rambled recently through the nearby woods of my Missouri home, I observed with sadness, giant trees that are withered, bent, or completely broken because of invasive vines.
The vines are slowly but surely taking the life of the tree. Oaks, maples, cottonwoods with giant vines climbing, surrounding, and sapping the nutrients from the life-giving soil they are planted in. Vines that surround Vines that bend Vines that overcome.
I was always curious how these vines attached themselves and grew to be so large in these trees. This winter, after the leaves had fallen I found the answer. Vines attach themselves to a young sapling at its earliest stages of development. There is only one hope for survival. A young tree already enveloped by vines. An Arborist or some other caring soul must sever the vines completely by cutting away a section, separating it from the surrounding soil.
Now it is the vine that shrivels up and falls away, leaving the tree to flourish. There are scars on the tree, but they heal, and the tree continues its upward reach to the heavens. There is freedom, recovery, and a flourishing tree that can fulfill its intended purpose. Severing the vines to find an uncommon freedom. The application for me has been crystal clear. God has been speaking His wisdom into me from the natural world during my recent season of recovery.
I too am powerless to overcome the vines of resentment, anger, and fear that stem from the root of my pride and self-centeredness. I pray for freedom from invasive species, a new season of freedom and growth with the master gardener who must continually hack away at the new vines that try to attach themselves. My prayer for you is to earnestly seek the master gardener to gain freedom from the killer vines, and grow into the beautiful tree you were meant to be.
